Women's Basketball takes down Blue Devils in final home regular season match

(Rochester Hills, MI) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team began the final week of the regular season, closing out its home schedule against the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech. The Warriors were able to get out to an early lead in the game and were able to keep it throughout, winning each quarter. The Warriors improve to 18-9 overall, while moving to 17-4 in conference play. 

FIRST HALF

RCU jumped out of the gate to a 13-5 lead, including scoring right off the opening tip and a Samone Andrews three-pointer. RCU continued, extending the lead to 19-8, with Shahd Bakkar, Jacey Somers, and Kendal Zeiter all grabbing points. The Blue Devils hit a couple of threes before the end of the period to make it a nine-point game. 

After the Warriors opened up the second period with a 5-2 lead, with a Samone Andrews "and-1", RCU's offense would go cold, not scoring over the next seven minutes, as LTU drew to within two points. Jacey Somers broke the run with five straight points before Shahd Bakkar and Andrews closed out the period, as RCU scored the last nine points. 

SECOND HALF

Both teams came out firing in Warriors leading 9-6 over the first 3:10 in the quarter. Samone Andrews continued her scoring output in the quarter, while Shahd Bakkar would add a couple of steals and layups. Kendal Zeiter and Ashley Loon would both add points before the quarter closed out, with Loon hitting a buzzer-beater. 

The defenses picked up over the first 1:31, with neither team being able to grab a bucket, before Kendal Zeiter hit a three-pointer. Samone Andrews scored six of the next eight points, and then Amal Younes hit her first three-pointer of the game. Tambre Williams and Jordan Peterson both added buckets before the final horn. 

TOP PERFORMERS

Samone Andrews led the scoring on the evening, leading both teams with 24 points, while Kendal Zeiter scored 19 and Jacey Somers grabbed 10 points. Somers and Shahd Bakkar both recorded four assists in the game. 

Ashley Loon and Tambre Williams led the way with six rebounds each, while Shahd Bakkar tallied seven steals and Kendal Zeiter recorded a game-high three blocks.

The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, February 21, as they close out the regular season with a road matchup against Madonna at 1 PM.
