Women's Basketball earns 59-54 win over Siena Heights

(Adrian, MI) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team headed down to Adrian, Michigan, for a matchup against the Siena Heights Saints. The Warriors first-half push was enough to hold off the Saints late comeback attempt as the Warriors earned their 16th win overall and 15th WHAC win of the season. 

 

FIRST HALF

Kendal Zeiter scored the first points for RCU, as the Warriors opened up on an 11-1 run with Amal Younes and Jacey Somers adding three and four points, respectively. Siena Heights battled back, scoring seven of the last 11 points with the final bucket in the period coming with 3:13 remaining. 

 

A Shahd Bakkar three-pointer opened the scoring in the second for RCU. The two teams would continue trading buckets throughout the period, with Jacey Somers, Ashley Loon, and Karmyn Lowry adding scores. Loon would add another three-pointer before the end of the period. 

 

SECOND HALF

After Siena Heights opened the period with a layup, the Warriors responded with an 11-3 run to move the lead back to 18 points. The Saints were able to take the lead down to 10 points before the end of the quarter with an 11-5 run. 

 

Amal Younes opened the final period with a layup on RCU's first possession. The Saints hit back with a 6-0 run to draw to within six points, the closest of the half. Karmyn Lowry and Tambre Williams hit shots before Jacey Somers hit a three-pointer. The final minute saw SHU attempt a comeback, outscoring the Warriors 7-2, but key free throws by Samone Andrews were able to hold off the Saints. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Jacey Somers was the sole Warrior to score in double figures with 16 points, while Amal Younes, Samone Andrews, and Kendal Zeiter each had nine points. Amal Younes led the passing attack with five assists. 

 

Kendal Zeiter recorded eight rebounds, while Jacey Somers brought down seven. The defense was led by Ashley Loon and Amal Younes with four and three steals, respectively, while Jacey Somers blocked four shots.

The Warriors will return to Rochester Hills on Saturday, February 14, with a matchup against Cleary University at 1 PM. The Warriors will be celebrating senior day at approximately 12:40 PM.
