Women's Basketball earns WHAC win over Michigan-Dearborn

(Rochester Hills, MI) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team returned to the Garth Pleasant Arena to start the front-end of a two-game homestand, taking on the Wolverines from Michigan-Dearborn. A big third-quarter scoring output from RCU, outscoring UMD 32-14, would be the big difference in the game as the Warriors picked up the 17-point win over UMD. 

 

RCU improves to 14-8 on the season and 13-3 in conference play. 

 

FIRST HALF

Kendla Zeiter scored for the Warriors right away on an assist from Amal Younes on the first possession of the game. Younes added the second bucket on the following possession. After a UMD bucket, RCU went on a quick 12-5 run with Ashley Loon hitting a three-pointer and Jacey Somers hitting a pair of shots. UMD made the final bucket with 2:32 left in the period. 

 

The Warriors opened the second period up with a 7-2 run, with Shahd Bakkar and Karmyn Lowry (three-pointer) getting in on the scoring. The Wolverines would respond with an 8-0 run to close out the second half. 

 

SECOND HALF

The Warrior offensepicked up the scoring in the third period, putting up 32 points. Kendal Zeiter, Ashley Loon, and Jacey Somers all put up points before forcing UMD to call a timeout. Zeiter would hit another couple of shots before Somers hit four points, eclipsing the 1,000-point mark for her career. Samone Andrews added seven points, and Ashley Loon hit a three-pointer to close out the quarter. 

 

Kendal Zeiter once again began the quarter with a bucket, before the Wolverine offense went on an 11-0 run to bring the game to within 13 points. Lucy Freytag got in the scoring column with a pair of free throws to spark an 8-2 run for RCU. Mylah Aalse hit a pair of three-pointers as well to close out the Warrior win. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Four of the Warrior starters scored in double figures, as they were led by Kendal Zieter with 18, Jacey Somers with 12, while Samone Andrews and Ashley Loon each had 10. Zeiter led the passing attack with five assists. 

 

Kendal Zeiter and Jacey Somers led the rebounding effort with seven and six rebounds, respectively. Samona Andrews, Ashley Loon, and Shahd Bakkar each recorded a trio of steals, while Zeiter led the way with four blocks. 

 

MILESTONES

Warriors junior Jacey Somers eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in the third quarter. Somers now has 1,003 points in her career and is third all-time in women's basketball history.
