Women's Basketball falls to Saints in midweek matchup
(Grand Rapids) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team headed to the west side of the state to take on the Aquinas Saints. The Saints were able to capitalize on a one-point advantage in the first half to pick up the crucial WHAC win.
The Warriors fall to 13-8 overall on the year and 12-3 in conference play.
FIRST HALF
Jacey Somers and Ashley Loon quickly gave the Warriors a 5-0 lead in the first. Following the four points from the Saints, RCU continued a strong stretch of scoring, with nine of the next 11 points, with Somers adding five. Both teams tallied seven points the rest of the period as RCU had a 20-14 lead.
The second period leaned the way of the Saints as they scored the first nine points, before Kendal Zeiter hit four free throws to break the run. Jacey Somers and Zeiter added seven more points before the end of the quarter.
SECOND HALF
The defenses picked up in the second half, as neither team scored over the first three-and-a-half minutes. Jacey Somers, Shahid Bakkar, and Tambre Williams added a couple of points to keep the Warriors to within five points as Aquinas grabbed the lead in the period.
Down one point heading into the period, Jacey Somers began the period with a layup, giving RCU the lead. Kendal Zeiter put RCU up five points, just under five minutes remaining. AQ had four straight free throws, bringing the lead down to a point. The teams traded a couple of baskets before AQ tied the game at 55 points with 43 seconds left.
Kendal Zeiter would hit a jumper with 14 seconds left to gain the lead, before the Saints hit a three, giving them the lead with five seconds left. A Jacey Somers jumper at the buzzer would fall just short.
TOP PERFORMERS
Two Warriors scored in double figures, led by Kendal Zeiter with 22 points, with Jacey Somers scoring 17. Ashley Loon, Amal Younes, and Shahd Bakker all tallied three assists in the game.
Kendal Zeiter led the way on the boards, pulling down 11 total rebounds. Ashley Loon created three turnovers in the game.
