Women's Basketball downs Defiance behind strong defensive play
(Rochester Hills, MI) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team continued its season at the Garth Pleasant Arena on Wednesday evening against the Defiance Yellow Jackets. The Warriors' defense would stiffle the Yellow Jackets into shooting 18.3% from the field enroute to the 88-30 victory.
RCU improves its season record to 13-6 overall and 12-1 in WHAC play.
FIRST HALF
Kendal Zeiter scored six of the team's first eight points, with Ashley Loon hitting a bucket, and Amal Younes hitting a three-pointer as RCU jumped out to an 11-2 lead. DC would respond by scoring eight of the next 11 points in the game to bring it back to a four-point game. That would be the closest score for the remainder of the game, though, as RCU put up a pair of buckets at the end of the quarter from Samone Andrews and Tambre Williams to lead 19-10.
Following a quick DC bucket, the Warrior offense picked up the scoring with Jacey Somers, Ashley Loon, and Samone Andrews all getting scores on consecutive possessions to make it 27-13. Those three would combine to total 24 of the team's second-quarter points, with Somers scoring nine as RCU led 48-15 at the half.
SECOND HALF
Samone Andrews and Kendal Zeiter would be the top scorers in the third period, putting up nine points apiece, with DC only grabbing four buckets. The RCU defense clamped down, forcing eight turnovers in the period with five coming off Warrior steals.
The final period saw the RCU bench play the full 10 minutes with Jordan Peterson pulling down seven rebounds in the fourth alone (four offensively). Karmyn Lowry led the way in the period with four points, while Mylah Aalse had three. The defense wouldn't slow down, though, holding DC to five points with one field goal on 7.7% shooting.
