Women's Basketball slows down the Racers, in 70-54 win

(Lima, OH) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team began the back half of the WHAC schedule on Saturday afternoon as they headed down to take on the Racers from Northwestern Ohio. RCU would end up outsourcing the Racers in each of the four quarters on their way to the 11th WHAC win of the season, moving to 12-6 overall. 

 

FIRST HALF

Jacey Somers scored the first bucket of the game with a layup on the Warriors second possession. The bucket would see both teams start to score back and forth with Ashley Loon hitting a three-pointer and Samone Andrews scoring a layup. RCU rounded out the quarter with an 8-0 run.

 

Shahid Bakkar scored the first bucket of the second period for the Warriors. Following a couple of UNOH free throws, Bakkar and Kendal Zeiter would score on back-to-back possessions. The Racers would go on a run, with aid from a couple of free throws and get back to within four points, before Bakkar hit a three-pointer and Jacey Somers hit a jumper. Somers would hit a three-point buzzer beater to close out the half. 

 

SECOND HALF

The second half began with an Amal Younes layup to get the RCU lead up to 11 points. That bucket sparked a 12-3 run for the Warriors with all five starters scoring in the run. The Racers would respond, going on a 9-4 run to close out the third and bring the lead back down to 13 points. 

 

Samone Andrews scored the first bucket nearly two minutes into the final period. The two teams defenses started to get stronger with neither team being able to find a bucket. RCU was able to keep the lead at double digits with Andrews and Kendal Zeiter each hitting multiple shots over the final minutes. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Samone Andrews led the team with 18 points on the day with Jacey Somers, Kendal Zeiter, and Shahd Bakkar rounding out the double-digit scoring with 17, 12, and 11 points, respectively. Ashley Loon and Kendal Zeiter would both total five assists on the day.

 

Kendal Zeiter led the way in the rebounding effort with seven rebounds, with Samone Andrews and Jacey Somers with six rebounds each. Zeiter led the team with two blocks.

RCU will return to the Garth Pleasant Arena on Wednesday, January 21, as they will play host to the Defiance Yellow Jackets at 5:30 PM.
