Women's Basketball starts new year out with win over Cleary

(Lansing, MI) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team returned to WHAC play on Saturday afternoon when they took on the Cleary Cougars. The Warriors took a 10-point lead following the first period, and held that lead throughout, and were able to extend it after holding the Cougars to two points in the final period. The Warriors move to 8-6 overall and 701 in conference play. 

 

FIRST HALF

After a Cleary three on their opening possession, Jacey Somers and Ashley Loon hit back-to-back threes to give the Warriors the lead that they would hold throughout the game. Samone Andrews and Amal Younes added to the score before the media timeout. Kendal Zeiter would hit four free throws, and Andrews made a layup to close out the quarter.

 

Jacey Somers opened the second quarter with a layup, extending the lead out to 12 points. The teams started to score back and forth throughout the quarter. Ashley Loon knocked down a three-pointer before Cleary scored the next five of seven points. Emily Lockey got in the scoring column before the media. Shahid Bakkar and Kendal Zeiter each made baskets before the end of the half. 

 

SECOND HALF

A couple of empty possessions began the third period, before both teams nabbed a pair of buckets. The two teams would continue to score buckets back and forth, with Kendal Zeiter, Ashley Loon, and Jacey Somers all scoring points. 

 

The final quarter began with RCU at a 15-point advantage, which the Warriors would push out to 33 points throughout the final 10 minutes. Jacey Somers scored the four of the first five points in the quarter, followed by a pair of Ashley Loon three-pointer. Cleary would score their only bucket of the period with 2:29 left. Jordan Peterson rounded out RCU's scoring in the match. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Four different Warriors scored in double figures, led by Ashley Loon, who tallied four three-pointers on the day. Jacey Somers, Kendal Zeiter, and Samone Andrews scored 16, 14, and 10 points, respectively. Zeiter had six assists to lead the team. 

 

Kendal Zeiter and Jacey Somers both recorded double-doubles with 15 and 10 rebounds each. Somers had four steals to lead the team, and Kendal Zeiter tied the RCU single-game record with eight blocks.

The Warriors will come back home on Wednesday, January 7, as they will host the Siena Heights Saints at 5:30 PM.
