Women's Basketball upsets #20 Indiana Tech in tight battle

(Rochester Hills, MI) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team stayed home for a matchup against the 20th-ranked Indiana Tech Warriors. A defensive game all-around saw both teams score below their season average, with RCU edging out a 54-53 victory. The win moves the Rochester Christian to 5-4 overall and 5-1 in WHAC play. 

 

FIRST HALF

Both sides started out the game with tight defense as the first bucket came nearly four minutes into the game with an IIT three-pointer. Kendal Zeiter responded right away with a layup, starting an 11-0 run, with Amal Younes scoring 11 points. Timbre Williams, Zeiter, and Jacey Somers close out the first scoring points as RCU closed out the quarter with a 15-9 lead. 

 

Kendal Zeiter started the second quarter scoring with a pair of free throws on the first RCU possession. Amal Younes and Ashley Loon would record back-to-back threes with Indiana Tech scoring an 8-6 run. The end of the half saw Younes and Samone Andrews combine for a double team, with Younes credited with a steal while Andrews netted the fastbreak layup with seconds remaining. 

 

SECOND HALF

IIT put up the first five points of the half, before Samone Andrews and Kendal Zeiter scored the next seven. Indiana Tech would then return right back with a 7-0 run to force an RCU timeout. Both teams would trade possessions with neither being able to score over the next two-and-a-half minutes until Zeiter broke the streak with an "and-1". Andrews scored the final bucket in the quarter as Indiana Tech missed a shot at the buzzer. 

 

Kendal Zeiter and Jacey Somers opened scoring with buckets on the first two possessions of the quarter for an 11-point lead. Indiana Tech, though, tied the game and took the lead quickly with three of four straight possessions with a three, a layup and free throws for a five-point lead, their largest of the day. The next four minutes saw the teams trade scores as RCU had to chip away at the IIT lead. RCU got crucial buckets and free throws from Samone Andrews and Tambre Williams before an Amal Younes three made it a one-point game with 7 seconds left. 

 

A quick foul by Amal Younes put Indiana Tech to the free-throw line, where the IIT player missed both shots. Kendal Zeiter brought down the rebound, and Amal Younes attempted to put the final shot, but was fouled with 0.6 seconds remaining, going to the line for three shots. Younes would make the first and third shots to give RCU the one-point advantage. A tipped pass and shot after the buzzer by Indiana Tech would end the game. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Kendal Zeiter was top on the team with 17 points, with Amal Younes and Samone Andrews also scoring in double figures with 15 and 10, respectively. Andrews led the team with three assists. 

 

The rebounding effort was led by Kendal Zeiter, recording her second double-double with 12 rebounds (nine coming defensively), with Ashley Loon bringing down six. Amal Younes forced four turnovers, with Samone Andrews stealing three passes.

The Warriors will be back in action next Saturday, closing out their 2025 home schedule against Cornerstone University with a 1 PM tip-off.
