Women's Basketball picks up second WHAC win of season against Defiance

(Defiance, OH) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team headed down to Ohio as they returned to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play against the Defiance Yellow Jackets. RCU used a six-point advantage in the second quarter to propel them to their second win overall and in WHAC play. 

 

FIRST HALF

Following a pair of DC baskets to open the game, Shahd Bakker recorded the first RCU point with a free throw. Mylah Aalse scored the first Warriors field goal at the 4:56 mark in the quarter. Kendal Zeiter made it a one-point game with her first bucket. Ashley Loon gave RCU their first lead of the game with a 7-0 run. Tambre Williams scored a couple of free throws, and Samone Andrews made a layup that gave RCU a three-point lead before a pair of DC buckets closed out the quarter. 

 

Tambre Williams, Amal Younes, and Ashley Loon opened the second quarter with scores on three straight possessions to start the second quarter for RCU. Nearly two minutes later, Shahd Bakkar and Jacey Somers scored layups to give RCU a 29-24 lead. Peterson recorded the final RCU basket of the first half with four minutes remaining as the Warrior defense was able to hold onto a five-point lead going into the half. 

 

SECOND HALF

DC opened the second half, bringing the score down to one point, before Kendal Zeiter and Jacey Somers scored four straight free throws, with Somers adding a layup. Jordan Peterson would break a two-and-a-half-minute scoreless streak by both teams for a nine-point lead. The teams continued to trade free throws throughout the rest of the quarter.

 

DC was able to bring the Warrior lead down to four points before Ashley Loon scored five straight points, and Mylah Aalse added a pair of scores to bring the lead to 10 for the first time in the game. Aalse was able to record a three-pointer to help seal the game with Emily Lockey and Amal Younes closing out the game with free throws. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

A pair of Warriors tallied double figures in points, with Ashley Loon leading the team with 16, while Mylah Aalse scored 10. Samone Andrews, Kendal Zeiter, Amal Younes, and Emily Lockey all recorded two assists in the game. 

 

Ashley Loon and Mylah Aalse also would lead the rebounding effort in the game with six rebounds each, while Jacey Somers, Jordan Peterson, and Emily Lockey each brought down five rebounds. Loon would lead the defenders with three steals. 

 

UP NEXT

The Warriors will be back on the court on Saturday, November 22, when they take on the Racers from Northwestern Ohio in Garth Pleasant Arena with a 1 PM tipoff.
