TURNOVERS HINDER WOMEN'S BASKETBALL AGAINST #5 MARIAN, 76-61
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Rochester (1-1) was taken down by the #5 Marian Knights (1-0) 76-61 on Tuesday night. The Warriors found themselves down early and weren't able to climb out of the hole despite a few runs throughout the game.
Freshman Jacey Somers produced another strong outing for her short collegiate career with 19 points and nine rebounds, and the Warriors had a highly efficient night from three, hitting 7/13 three-point attempts during the contest. However, Rochester had trouble producing shot opportunities, with the team getting into turnover trouble. The Warriors turned the ball over 26 times to Marian's 17.
The Knights opened the game on a staggering 16-2 run and maintained a double-digit advantage for the entire game. Freshman Riley Place would hit a transition three to get Rochester to a ten-point deficit in the second quarter, but Marian would regain momentum and slowly add to the lead. The Knights jumped out to a 20-point lead and entered halftime up 40-19.
Somers would hit a three early into the second half behind a dish from senior Celeste Mershimer, but the Knights would prevent Rochester from scoring for the next four minutes of play. Mershimer, Somers, and Place made a few scoring plays to bring the deficit back within 15, but Marian pushed the lead back out to 22.
Rochester would crawl back into a 15-point deficit behind some good minutes from sophomore Melanie Moore and junior Imari Martin, but the Warriors wouldn't be able to make much of a dent in the deficit before the final horn.
