Softball drops series to Cougars on Sunday

(Howell, MI) - The Rochester Christian softball team resumed their season, following an off day on Saturday, traveling to the Cleary Cougars for a doubleheader.

GAME 1 - CLEARY 2, ROCHESTER CHRISTIAN 1

Kaylie Rickert pitched the first 4.2 innings in the circle, allowing seven hits, but limiting the Cougar baserunners to a single run.

Chloe Gildea got the Warriors started off on the right foot with a first-inning home run to right field.

That home run would be the main action for the majority of the game, as many of the batters on both sides would get out within the first couple of pitches.

The Cougars were finally able to break the shutout with an RBI infield single to tie the game at a run apiece.

The seventh inning had Makayla Lezotte hit a two-out triple, but they would not be able to cross the plate. Emily Leusby got two of the first three batters out in the seventh inning, before they hit back-to-back singles to walk off the Warriors.

Emily Leusby (3-12) closed the final two innings, allowing a trio of hits with the second CU run, and striking out three batters.

GAME 2 - CLEARY 8, ROCHESTER CHRISTIAN 1

Emily Leusby pitched the full six innings in the circle, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 13 hits with three strikeouts.

RCU once again took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jaya Forti doubled to center field and would move to third on a sacrifice bunt and score on an Emma Cronkright sacrifice fly.

From that point, Cleary scored a run in the third and fourth innings, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to win the second game of the doubleheader 8-1.
