ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Warriors couldn't find enough stops defensively to take care of the Cleary Cougars on Wednesday afternoon, falling 13-0 and 14-4 during the doubleheader at Jaycee Field. Jessica Laird led RCU in hits on the day, also logging three RBI.
The first game was defined by errors from both teams, with RCU committing five, which allowed the Cougars to take a large lead early. The Warriors' first base hits came in the fourth inning, when DH Kylee Dillard struck a ball straight down centerfield following a Madelyn Latham single to second base. However, RCU couldn't capitalize with two on base. RCU had two on base in the fifth inning, but couldn't score after three groundouts.
The Cougars started out game two with five runs scored after taking advantage of multiple stolen bases. Following three more Cleary runs in the top of the second, the Warriors got a spark. Beginning with Rachael Winkel, the pitcher started a stretch of three singles in four at-bats. Ella Hayes and Jaya Forti logged singles, setting up Laird's biggest hit of the day. The outfielder doubled to centerfield, buying all three baserunners enough time to get home.
After the Cougars tacked on three runs, RCU scored again in the bottom of the fourth. Hayes reached second base on a walk and a groundout, reaching home thanks to a double by Forti into left field. However, three more runs by the Cougars in the fifth closed out the second game.
