Penn State-Mt. Alto
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Warriors (2-5) fell short in all three games on the third day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. In the first and last contests of the day, the Warriors played close games that just fell shy in the final innings.
WARRIORS VS. PENN STATE-MT. ALTO - L, 2-3
It was a slow-paced first game for the Warriors, with neither team scoring before the fourth inning. Mt. Alto threw the first punch with an RBI single, but the Warriors responded in the sixth inning with an RBI double by Kylee Dillard. Dillard was set up for the RBI by Jaya Forti, who singled on the previous at-bat.
Mt. Alto struck back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a sacrifice fly to second base. However, the Warriors didn't back down in the seventh inning, loading up the bases to set up an exciting game-tying opportunity. Emma Cronkright and Isabella Asai would get on base first for the Warriors, followed by another single from Audrey Soares. The Warriors would get caught at home by way of a fielder's choice on the next at-bat, but Caroline O'Donohue hit a single to get Asai the tying run. The Warriors defended well to end the seventh and send the game into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, the Warriors weren't able to get a player on base, with Mt. Alto fielding everything the Warriors hit their way. In the bottom of the eighth, Mt. Alto secured the win off a wild pitch.
WARRIORS VS. MARYMOUNT - L, 4-9
The Warriors got off to a strong start in this one, responding well after conceding a run in the first inning. The Warriors got three consecutive batters out in the second inning before scoring three runs after stolen bases from Jayde Dominey-McLean and Rachel Winkel. Jessica Laird got the Warriors on the board with a left-field RBI single, advancing Dominey-McLean home. After that, O'Donohue continued a great day at bat with a two-RBI single to score Cronkright and Soares.
After an uneventful third inning, Marymount answered back with runs of their own in the fourth to bring the game back even. In the bottom of the fourth, the Warriors got another RBI single from Forti, who gave Soares her second run of the day. Marymount dominated the next inning, though, scoring four runs to put the game in a tough spot for the red and black. Marymount scored another run in the final inning to settle this one 9-4.
WARRIORS VS. PENN STATE-BEAVER - L, 3-5
The Warriors weren't able to defend their win against PSU-Beaver earlier in the week, falling behind 3-5. For Rochester Christian, it was another strong start as the team took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. In that inning, Chloe Wolfe singled to give Forti a run, before the Warriors scored again on a wild pitch behind the efforts of Dominey-McLean.
RCU played great defense in the third and fourth innings, getting two batters struck out in the fourth. However, Beaver went on a three-inning scoring run, scoring four runs in the final three innings with not much of an answer from RCU. The Warriors did get a run in the seventh inning, when Dillard advanced to home off a wild pitch. However, that wouldn't be enough for the Warriors, as the team received its third out.
