Warriors take game against UMD, game 2 suspended due to weather
(Rochester Hills, MI) - The Rochester Christian baseball team rounded out its four-game series against the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines on Monday afternoon. After a 9-1 win in game 1 for the Warriors, the teams would battle back and forth throughout the second game of the doubleheader, before the game would get suspended due to weather.
GAME 1 - ROCHESTER CHRISTIAN 9, MICHIGAN-DEARBORN 1
Matthew Redmond (3-3) twirled a gem in the opening game of the day, allowing five base runners on the day with only one hit. Redmond would also tie his career high in strikeouts with 10.
Michigan-Dearborn's sole run in the game came before Redmond was able to settle in, as he walked a pair of batters and hit one before a wild pitch brought a run in.
The Wolverine lead would not last long as RCU struck back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Vinnie Campisi would cross the plate for the first run of the game, and Nathaniel Crane hit a two-RBI double, scoring Dakota Shafer and Beau Falkenhagen.
Cael Kuzinski began the second inning with a double and would later score on a wild pitch. Issander Vega, who walked earlier in the inning, would score the second run of the inning on a failed pickoff, and Dakota Shafer would then hit an RBI groundout to score Vinnie Campisi. RCU added another run in the fourth with Issander Vega scoring on an error.
The final runs in the game came from Jayden Peterson, scoring on a fielder's choice, and Cael Kuzinski scoring on a wild pitch.
Matthew Redmond would continue his strong day in the final two innings, striking out two batters in the sixth and one in the seventh, stranding one runner.
GAME 2 - ROCHESTER CHRISTIAN 6, MICHIGAN-DEARBORN 6 - SUSPENDED IN THE 10TH INNING
Joseph Arends began the game on the mound, pitching the first four innings, allowing two runs on one hit with four strikeouts.
Both teams first got on the board in the second inning, each with a solo home run, with Beau Falkenhagen hitting the Warriors' home run.
In the third inning, both teams were able to score runs, with UMD retaking the lead in the top of the inning on a wild pitch before RCU made it 4-2 after the bottom of the third. After the first two batters got out to start the bottom half of the inning, the Warriors got three straight hits with Cael Kuzinski (scored on a wild pitch), Issander Vega, both hitting singles, and Aiden Alspaugh hitting in Vega with a double. Alspaugh came around to score on an error.
After a couple of scoreless innings on both sides, would come to an end in the sixth, as Dearborn would start their comeback, scoring on a fielder's choice. The UMD scoring run continued in the seventh and eight inning, putting up a trio of runs, taking a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
Issander Vega brought the Warriors back to within a run with a home run to right-center field. The ninth inning began with Nathaniel Crane doubling to left center field, followed by a hit by pitch and a walk, which would load the bases with Issander Vega up to the plate. Vega would work a 3-2 count, before getting hit by a pitch, to tie the game up at six runs each. The Wolverines would get the final out, sending the game to extra innings.
A hit by pitch and a steal would begin the top of the 10th inning, before lightning in the area would suspend the game till a later date.
Landon Fahey took over in the fifth inning and pitched three total innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. Connor Foreman pitched the eighth inning, allowing a run on one hit with a strikeout.
Jeffrey Preston pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one walk with a duo of strikeouts. Jayden Peterson would come in from right field to pitch in the 10th inning before the game was suspended.

The Warriors will be back on the field on Friday and Saturday, traveling to Madonna University for a pair of doubleheaders with both sets beginning at 1 PM.
