Men's Hockey downed by Aquinas in pair of games
(Rochester Hills, MI) - The Rochester Christian men's hockey team took on the Saints from Aquinas in a WHAC matchup over the weekend. The Saints would earn the win Friday night, 7-4, before earning a close 5-4 win on Saturday.
GAME 1 - AQ 7, RCU 2
Andrew Beausang opened the match, netting the first goal, seven minutes into the game, on a shorthanded opportunity. Aquinas recorded a goal to draw even with a little under five minutes remaining.
The second period saw Aquinas nab four goals, including their first power play goal of the game. Maxximus Savel drew the Warriors one goal closer, scoring with seven seconds left in the period. Brody Vachon and Andrew Beausang assisted on the goal.
The final period saw the Saints extend and push out their lead to five goals which would ultimately be the final deficit in the game.
The Saints outshot the Warriors 45-30 in the game.
Nicholas Spognardi (2-5-1) played the full game in net, making 38 saves in the game against the 45 shots faced.
GAME 2 - AQ 5, RCU 4
48 seconds into the second game of the weekend series, Jake Wishnewitz netted a goal for the 1-0 lead, with Shaun Zatelli earning an assist. AQ took a 2-1 lead following the period, scoring their second with 28 seconds left in the period.
Aquinas moved their lead out to 3-1, with a goal 3-and-a-half minutes into the middle period. Kyle Hauer managed to get the Warriors back to within a goal about three minutes later. Andrew Beausang tallied an assist on the play.
The Warriors were finally able to get the game back to a tied score, as Kyle Hauer netted his second goal with assists from Maxximus Savela nd Jake Mullins. Aquinas would retake the lead two and a half minutes later, and would later add an insurance goals 10 minutes later. The insurance goal would come up big for the Saints, as Jake Mullins scored a power play goal with 21 seconds left.
Nicholas Spognardi would also start the second game of the series, this time making 70 saves in the match in 56:34 minutes of play.
TOP PERFORMERS
Spognardi made 108 saves over the two games.
Offensively, Kyle Hauer led the way with two goals, while Andrew Beausang tallied three points with one goal. Jake Mullins recorded both a goal and an assist in the series.
