(Rochester Hills, MI) - The Rochester Christian men's hockey team took on the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines in a weekend home-and-home series. UMD won in commanding fashion on Friday night before earning a 5-2 win on Saturday.
GAME 1 - UMD 13, RCU 3
The first goal of the series saw Michigan-Dearborn take advantage of being a man-up before adding another two goals in the period.
The second 20 minutes saw UMD outshoot RCU 16-9 as they scored five goals in the period, with three short-handed and one power play. Zachary Domanski would get RCU on the board with an unassisted power play goal, and Cole Zalewski scored on a pass from Ryan Long as well.
The final period saw UMD score five more times, with Cole Zalewski netting his second goal on a pass from Shaun Zatelli.
Trey Hoffmann (0-5-0) took the loss in the game, making 36 saves against the 49 shots he faced.
GAME 2 - UMD 5, RCU 2
Shaun Zatelli got the Warriors on the board first in the second game of the series, just 53 seconds into the match. Hayden Wilson and Preston Stenzel earned assists on the goal. Just about three minutes later, UMD would even the game up at 1, before taking the lead five minutes later.
The second period saw the Wolverines narrowly outshoot RCU, 8-5, but neither team was able to put a puck in the back of the net. RCU had a power play opportunity towards the end of the period, but was unable to capitalize.
The first two goals of the second period came 5:38 and 8:51 into the final 20 minutes as UMD took a 4-1 lead, with one goal being on a man advantage. Nearly five minutes later, following a UMD 2-minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, Brody Vachon received passes from Kyle Huaer and Ryan Long to draw within two goals. Neither team could score until 20 seconds remaining, when the Wolverines added their fifth goal.
Nicholas Spognardi (2-4-1) played the full 60 minutes in net, saving 35 shots of the 40 he faced.
